Why it’s important: Lateral movement, or the ability to move laterally (sideways), is crucial in soccer. The Lateral Ladder Drill measures a prospect’s foot speed and ability to move laterally. Defenders often need to move laterally to maintain proper defensive positioning. This is especially important when marking an opponent, tracking runs, or closing down space. Attacking players also use lateral movements to create space for themselves by dragging defenders out of position, making it easier to receive passes or take on opponents one-on-one.
